Anxiety, which is another word for physically living in fear, commonly develops after complex/childhood or acute trauma experiences, as the effects of trauma can linger in the mind and the body long after the trauma has occurred.

Trauma-induced anxiety can manifest as a heightened state of alertness and persistent worry. The brain’s stress response system is constantly “on” resulting in feelings of perceived threat all the time. You may find yourself anticipating ten steps ahead and planning how to survive all possibilities. This can feel like panic, hyperactivity, inability to relax, overthinking, hypervigilance, digestive issues, mistrust of others, emotional flooding, chronic pain, irritability, and nightmares/sleep issues.

Anxiety may have you pinned as

  • you’re nice and easy to be around, but people-please too much;

  • you obsess over trivial things that other people probably don’t even notice;

  • you’re consumed by every mistake you make by beating yourself up over it;

  • you know you’re capable but you don’t fully believe in yourself;

  • In every situation, the worst scenario is your biggest thought.

Addressing the invisible wounds of past trauma.

A big part of what makes us “high-functioning” women is anxiety. It’s what informs our people-pleasing - if we’re worried those around us are not “okay” (or a project, or an expectation, or a perception….), we’ll do what it takes to ensure everyone/everything around us feels/is “okay!” That also shows the world that we are the ones to take care of literally everything. We show the world how efficient we are, how pleasurable we are, how detailed we are, and what great planners we are. And the reality is, inside your skin, you’re suffering.

Healing from trauma-related anxiety will not take away your “high-functioning” abilities or results. Imagine living day-to-day with a sense of calm and clarity, to cast away those negative thoughts, and saying ‘no’ confidently. Your productivity will come with authenticity. More security with yourself will leave room for acceptance if you don’t get it all done sometimes. And you’ll be able to deal with difficult relationships (we all have them!) with ease and peace.

I use a variety of therapeutic approaches and match your needs with the most effective methods. Drawing from my education, formal training, clinical work, and life experiences, I turn primarily to Brainspotting (Certified), as well as EMDR; Eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, TF-CBT; Trauma focused cognititve behavioral therapy, Trauma-Sensitive HeartMath with Biofeedback, EFT; Emotionally focused therapy, CBT; Cognitive behavioral therapy, ACT; Acceptance and commitment therapy, and Mindfulness therapy.

Anxiety FAQs

  • Medication may be considered as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, especially in cases where anxiety symptoms are severe. However, medication alone is often not sufficient; trauma-focused therapy is generally recommended for addressing the underlying issues.

  • Absolutely NOT. The main method of treatment I use in therapy is Brainspotting. It does not require you to rehash details of anything. As your partner and facilitator of your healing during Brainspotting, the only thing I’m interested in are the associated emotions you are storing in your body pertaining to what happened to you. That’s it. Just the emotions.

  • There are many reasons why anxiety symptoms arise in us as adults. There are genetic factors, substance use, medication side effects, chronic illness, and hormonal changes, and there are different types of anxieties, such as social anxiety, specific phobias, and separation and performance anxieties. As a therapist whose clinical focus is trauma, my methodologies (Brainspotting, EMDR) work for all of these anxiety types! So whether your anxiety is trauma-related or not, you’re covered here!

Brainspotting for Trauma-
Related Anxiety

Brainspotting is an advanced brain-body therapy that focuses on identifying, processing, and releasing imbalances, trauma, and residual emotional stress.

It is based on the premise that ‘where you look affects how you feel’ and finds that eye positions correlate with unconscious, emotional experiences. It reaches parts of the brain that are not generally accessed through traditional talk therapy approaches. Click below to learn more about this innovative and effective approach to trauma healing.
